what felt like another deep pothole, and Seth bit his tongue, bringing

himself back to the present. He had been working on one corner of the

tarp, his fingers slightly more nimble as time went on and the drug

presumably wore off a little. If he could get it free….

They bounced around some more, and Seth"s body was airborne

before slamming to the floor of the truck again. A dry streambed? They

also seemed to be slowing down. Nearing Rudy"s destination?

Shit.

Seth scratched at the tarp, tugging, groping desperately for

purchase… and then he had the corner free. Hard, late sun spiked into

his eyes, so he squinted. He could see scrub and desert and a dirt road

with rising dust behind them. They hit another gully, but this time it

helped him because it put his weight into tearing free more of the tarp.

The truck slowed, and Seth gripped the side, leaning over, seeing

the big wheel jogging up and down, and before he could think about

what he was doing and how insane it was, he let himself fall.
